Illinois man sentenced to 52 years in prison

CHAMPAIGN - An Illinois man convicted of stabbing and strangling his former girlfriend to death has been sentenced to 52 years in prison.

Darmel Smith, 34, received the sentence on Thursday.  At his sentencing, Champaign County Circuit Judge Heidi Ladd said that Smith's actions were "cold, detached, and chilling."

Authorities say Smith killed Sheena Williams, 30, on September 6, 2013.  Williams' family members found her dead in her home later that day.

Smith will receive 14 months credit for time already served in the Champaign County jail.  Smith must serve 100 percent of his sentence.
