Decatur – The Decatur Fire Department is receiving praise for containing a massive fire that swept through a warehouse on Wednesday evening.
“We are blessed in Decatur with a great fire and police department,” Mayor Mike McElroy told WAND News on Friday.“I thought they did a fantastic job.Other people from the city that were there said that they just worked and did everything they possibly could to contain what was a very, very hot and large fire.”
The warehouse was located at the corner of Grand Avenue and Illinois Street. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
An emotional Mike Mize, Senior was thankful the fire department was able to save his house on Illinois Street. His home sits directly across from the warehouse.
“Had it not been for their persistence I probably wouldn't have a home to be in today,” Mize stated.“They put their life in danger to save your home.”
The fire department says it used fifty to sixty Decatur firefighters. They also received help from several departments in surrounding towns.
