Illinois doctor convicted of illegally dispensing drugs

BENTON - A southern Illinois doctor has been convicted of illegally distributing controlled substances.

Authorities say Naeem Kohli, 60, was found guilty on Tuesday of seven counts of illegal dispensing of controlled substances.

Kohli was licensed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to prescribe drugs such as oxycodone, methadone, and hydromorphone, but was accused of illegally dispensing those drugs to patients for a four year period, ending in 2013.

Kohli was charged with illegally dispensing drugs and health care fraud in March 2014, and his license was suspended by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in July 2014.

Kohli is scheduled to be sentenced on May 20.  He could face up to 140 years in prison.
