IDHS helping working families file taxes this year

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Human Services is urging eligible families to take advantage of state-supported tax preparation assistance services.

IDHS officials say the department is partnering with the Center for Economic Progress to provide free tax preparation assistance at 15 tax assistance centers.  These services are being provided free of charge to families making less than $50,000 a year, and individuals making less than $25,000 a year.

Officials are also encouraging Illinois taxpayers to apply for Earned Income Tax Credits, which are expected to help working families save an extra $105 million in 2015.  Both programs helped 29,421 taxpayers collect nearly $50 million in refunds, or about $1,700 per household.
