Urbana receives U.S. EPA award

URBANA - Urbana officials say the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected the city to be a 2014 WasteWise Local Government Partner of the Year award recipient.

Officials say the award recognizes the accomplishments of research institutes, local governments, and retailers that participate in the EPA's WasteWise program.  Urbana earned the award based on an improvement in waste diversion, as well as the way waste materials were managed.

The WasteWise program aims to reduce municipal and industrial wastes by helping businesses and organizations apply sustainable materials management practices.  By reducing wastes, businesses and organizations could reduce their climate footprint, save money, improve efficiency, and protect the environment.

In 2013, WasteWise participants reported diverting and preventing nearly 7.6 million tons of waste from being disposed in incinerators or landfills.  For more information on the WasteWise program, visit www.epa.gov/epawaste/conserve/smm/wastewise/.
