Recommendations to improve airport backed by U of I Chancellor

SAVOY - An advisory group's recommendations for improving Champaign's Willard Airport has received the support of University of Illinois Chancellor Phyllis Wise.

Recommendations being endorsed by Wise include improving marketing of the airport, expanding air service, and upgrading ground-travel access.  The advisory group also recommended that a management company run the airport, and if not, then the university should hire a chief executive officer that would negotiate with airlines.  Financial contributions from businesses, Champaign, Urbana, and Champaign County were also recommended.

The University of Illinois created Willard Airport in the 1950s.  Every year, the university pays $400,000 to support the airport.
