Central Illinois avoids full force of weekend winter storm

LINCOLN - While many northern Illinois communities were struck by the brunt of this past weekend's blizzard, much of central Illinois was spared from the strong winter storm.

Most central Illinois communities saw less than seven inches of snow accumulation, in comparison to Chicago, where 18 inches of snow fell.  Some communities saw significantly less than what was expected, as well.  Springfield residents were preparing for as much as six inches of snow, but only received a little more than two.

According to National Weather Service meteorologist Daryl Onton, higher-than-predicted temperatures also resulted in some communities seeing more rain than snow.
