Rauner awards medical marijuana licenses to businesses

CHICAGO - Governor Bruce Rauner has awarded medical marijuana licenses to 52 retail shops and 18 cultivation centers.

According to Rauner spokesperson Lance Trover, the winning businesses will receive notification of their selection on Monday.  However, the awarding of medical marijuana licenses for businesses in certain districts is being delayed, as those applications are undergoing further review.

The Rauner administration says the delays are related to a statement that was released on Monday, which listed four problems in former governor Pat Quinn's process for awarding licenses that had created "a risk of substantial and costly litigation."  As a result, steps were taken to deal with the problems that posed risks, delaying licenses for about eight businesses.

Jason Barclay, a member of Rauner's administration, says that state officials are apologizing to medical marijuana patients for the "additional minimal delay.
