Champaign authorities arrest 2 in connection with U of I student's death

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign authorities say they have arrested two individuals in connection with the death of a University of Illinois student who was reported missing last month.

Authorities say Reginald Scott, 21, and Daniel Gonzalez, 21, were arrested Monday night in connection with the death of Vicente Mundo.  Both Scott and Gonzalez face first-degree murder charges, and are being held on $2 million bond.

Authorities say Mundo was last seen alive leaving a Champaign apartment on January 25 at about 7:00 p.m.  The Champaign County Sheriff's Office says deputies were called to the area of County Road 900N, near the intersection of 1000E, in Tolono Township for a report of a person found unconscious along the roadside.  The Champaign County Coroner's Office has confirmed that the body found has been identified as Mundo.

Authorities also say that Mundo's car has been recovered, and Gonzalez's 2000 Plymouth Neon, along with other potential evidence, has also been seized.  According to the Champaign County Sheriff's Office, Mundo's death was allegedly part of a pre-planned armed robbery involving the sale of a small amount of marijuana.

Champaign authorities allege that the incident happened inside Gonzalez's vehicle while it was parked in Mundo's apartment's parking garage Sunday evening.  At some point during the alleged robbery, police say Mundo was shot once in the back of the head.  Authorities say after the murder, Scott and Gonzales allegedly took Mundo's body to a rural area in Tolono, removed it from the vehicle, and left it near a tree line.  Police also say the handgun believed to have been used in this crime has been recovered this morning.

At this time, authorities say there is no connection between Mundo's death and Christian Zamora's disappearance.  We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
