More than 296,000 Illinois residents signed up for health insurance

CHICAGO - Federal officials say as of January 30, more than 296,000 Illinois residents have signed up for private health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

According to officials, 296,293 Illinois resident have either selected a health plan through HealthCare.gov, or were automatically enrolled.  Federal officials also say that the Chicago metropolitan area has more than 241,000 enrollees, and the St. Louis metropolitan area has almost 97,000 people enrolled.  However, the totals exceed the Illinois figure because the metro areas cross state lines.

Federal officials add that approximately 78 percent of Illinois enrollees were eligible to receive financial assistance to help lower monthly costs.  Open enrollment this year is scheduled to run through February 15.
