U of I officials to launch SafeWalks app

URBANA - The University of Illinois Police Department's Student Patrol program has announced that its new SafeWalks mobile app will be launched in the near future.

Students at the university's Urbana-Champaign campus who need to find a way to get home safely will be able use the app to request a SafeWalks escort.  All requests made through the app will go through the Student Patrol office, and patrollers will be dispatched to the location of the request after a confirmation phone call.

Users will only need to provide their University of Illinois credentials the first time they launch the app.  SafeWalks will automatically pin the phone's location while the app is in use, allowing patrollers to arrive to your location, even if you don't know where you are.

Campus officials say they recommend that students not walk home alone at night, as criminals usually target individuals who are by themselves.  This new program helps lower the opportunity for crime.
