MEDORA - Authorities say a central Illinois fire chief who was responding to a call was killed when he was struck by a fire engine that was backing up.

Police say Medora Fire Protection District Chief Kenneth Lehr, 59, was working with other firefighters to clear a path for a medical helicopter on Thursday when he was hit by a fire engine.  The firefighters were helping a man whose leg was broken by a tree limb that had fallen.

Authorities say Lehr was pronounced dead at the scene.  He had held the position of chief for the fire district for eight years.
