Champaign police investigate armed robbery

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying a suspect in an armed robbery that happened on January 9.

Champaign police say at about 10:03 p.m., officers were dispatched to Murphy USA gas station, located in the 2600 block of North Prospect Avenue, for a report of an armed robbery.  Upon arriving, officers say they were informed by an employee that a person had entered the store and displayed a handgun.  The person then told the employee to fill a black-colored backpack with money from the cash register.  After the money was placed into the backpack, the person left the store and ran south.

Police say the suspect was described as a black male in his 20's, standing about 5'8" to 5'10" tall with an athletic build.  The suspect had red fabric covering his face, and was wearing a black-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans.  The suspect was also in possession of the black-colored backpack.
