SPRINGFIELD - Springfield's LGBT community gathered, Saturday evening, to celebrate progress made during the past year. The black-tie affair honored citizens who made that progress possible. Awards were presented to people who've made the LGBT community stronger and more visible. Bert Morton, who coordinated the gala, says a lot was accomplished last year, but there is still a lot to do.
"We just simply have discovered that the closet has not gained anything for anybody and what we have discovered by being out of the closet and being visible is that we have found more friends than we ever knew that we ever had," said Morton.
The gala was organized by Springfield's Coalition of Rainbow Alliances. The organization has been an active force in Springfield's gay community for 15 years.
