About 1,300 health professionals sign up for mental health reporting system

SPRINGFIELD - According to Illinois Department of Human Services officials, nearly 1,300 health professionals registered with the Firearm Owner Identification Mental Health Reporting System in 2014.

Officials say 1,286 clinicians and health professionals registered with the system in its first year, and that based on the numbers, the system is working as it's supposed to.

The system was created when the Firearm Concealed Carry Act was passed in 2013.  Under the act, health professionals must report any patients who they believe pose a danger to others or themselves.

IDHS officials say nursing homes, hospitals, and facilities with mental health treatment programs reported more than 138,500 potentially dangerous patients in 2014.
