Former NFL Assistant Mike Phair Hired as Illinois Co-Defensive Coordinator

CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois head football coach Tim Beckman added to his staff Friday, hiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant Mike Phair as co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach.

Phair will join Tim Banks at the position, who has served as defensive coordinator in all three of Beckman's seasons at Illinois.

"I am extremely pleased to add someone of coach Phair's caliber to to our coaching staff," Beckman said through a university press release. "He is established as one of the rising defensive line coaches in the profession."

Phair spent the last 13 seasons coaching in the NFL, most recently as the assistant defensive line coach in Tampa Bay in 2014. He also spent three season with the Bears (2011-2013).

Prior to that, Phair was on staff for six years in Seattle, three as a coach, and three as an area scout.

Illinois posted for the position in January, following a 6-7 season.  The Illini have finished 10th or worse in the Big Ten in total defense each season under Banks.

Phair will replace Greg Colby, who was fired last month, as defensive line coach.
