State lawmaker pushing for driver's education classes to include motorcycle safety

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois residents taking driver's education classes could soon be required to learn about motorcycle safety and awareness under a proposal that's being pushed by a state lawmaker.

Under State Representative Tom Bennett's proposal, the Illinois School Code's driver's education act would be amended to require motorcycle safety and awareness lessons be included in behind-the-wheel classes.

Bennett says the proposal's language was kept general, in order to give schools that teach driver's education courses flexibility.  He also says that the proposal was created in response to concerns that he has heard from his constituents.

According to Illinois Department of Transportation officials, motorcycle-related fatalities accounted for 15 percent of all vehicle fatalities in 2013.
