SPRINGFIELD - Legislation that would create a new task force to investigate and prevent the theft of recyclable metals has been filed in the Illinois House.
State Representative Jay Hoffman introduced the measure. Under the legislation, the task force, comprised of local police chiefs, industry representatives, state legislators, and others, would create and review new ways to stop the thefts. The task force's findings would be presented to the governor each year.
Hoffman says the state needs a long-term solution to copper theft. Insurance groups say they receive more than 10,000 copper theft insurance claims each year.
