SPRINGFIELD - Faculty members at the University of Illinois - Springfield have announced that they have formed a union.
On Tuesday, the Illinois Federation of Teachers announced that the new union was certified last Friday by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. Union officials say the group has 137 members, and that the creation of the union will bring more stability, higher retention rates, and more experience in the classroom.
According to English and Linguistics professor Donna Bussell, studies show that universities that have faculty unions are more likely to have high graduation rates, lower tuition rates, and less bureaucracy.
Union officials say their next step will be to negotiate the group's first contract.
