CARBONDALE - Authorities say a southern Illinois man who was convicted of aggravated battery with a firearm has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Omari Tinsley, 19, received his sentence on Wednesday.  Tinsley was originally facing additional charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and attempted first-degree murder in connection with the 2014 incident.

According to authorities, Tinsley was involved in an altercation with a fellow student at a high school parking lot when the incident occurred.  Prosecutors say Tinsley shot the student's father, Jerome Merriweather, in the stomach, resulting in injuries that will require long-term care.
