Champaign Fire Department responds to Wednesday night fire

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Fire Department says eight people have been displaced after a fire damaged an apartment building Wednesday night.
Authorities say at about 6:18 p.m., firefighters responded to the 400 block of Briar Lane for a report of a structure fire.  Upon arriving firefighters say they found light smoke coming from one of the apartment building's units.  Upon further investigation, firefighters determined the fire to be in a plumbing chase wall, running from the first to the second floor.

Officials say firefighters quickly began to extinguish the flames, with crews running several hand lines to the first and second floors.  Firefighters say one person was inside the building at the time of the fire, and that eight people have been displaced as a result of the fire.

The Champaign Police Department helped with traffic control during this time, and the Emergency Services Support Team and American Red Cross were on scene to help the displaced residents.
