Champaign PD make robbery, fleeing arrest

CHAMPAIGN -- Champaign police made an early morning arrest after a car chase that ended in a fiery crash.

Police say officers were called to the MACH 1 gas station on Bloomington Road, on a report of an armed robbery. Officers in that area when the call went out saw the suspect speed away from the gas station, and followed the vehicle. Officers tried to stop the driver, but he disobeyed their directions and kept driving at high speeds on snow-packed roads.

Police say the car veered off the road and hit a tree on Mattis Avenue at Round Barn Road, then burst into flames. Officers put out the flames with fire extinguishers from their patrol cars, then arrested the driver, Lawrence D. Long, Jr., 33, from Kankakee.

Police say they found evidence of the robbery in his car, including cash and stolen store goods. Long now faces armed robbery, disobeying a traffic signal, driving on a suspended license, fleeing police, and other charges.
