1 dead in Thursday afternoon house fire

WITT - The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has announced that one person has died after house fire Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say a house fire in the 500 block of South Main Street in Witt was reported at about 4:26 p.m.  Witt Volunteer Fire Department, Nokomis Fire Protection District, and Nokomis-Witt Area Ambulance Agency crews were dispatched to the scene, with first responders reporting that large flames were seen coming from the structure.

Firefighters immediately made entry and began to extinguish the flames.  After much of the fire was put out, firefighters conducted a search of the residence, during which they found a female located at the rear of the home.  The female was removed from the home, and after resuscitation efforts failed, was pronounced dead.

The origin of the fire and the cause of death are under investigation by the Witt Police Department, Witt Fire Department, Montgomery County Coroner's Office, and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.

We will provide more updates as they become available.
