Champaign Vet Receives French Honor

Champaign – France's highest honor.  Nearly 70 years since the end of World War II the “Legion of Honor” medal was presented Friday to Charles “Chick” Bruns.

The 95 year old Champaign resident served in the Army and was part of five invasions.  His service in southern France helped liberate that nation from Nazi control.

“There are many, and many, many of other soldiers that's more deserving than I.  I'll take it anyhow,” Chick joked before a crowd of veterans at the VFW hall in Champaign.

The medal was presented to Bruns by the Consul General of France who is assigned to Chicago.
