NEOGA - The Cumberland County Coroner says a former Neoga police chief died after suffering a heart attack while shoveling snow on March 2.
Coroner Donna Whitaker says Gerry Mattern, 68, died while shoveling snow from his driveway Monday morning. Mattern worked at the Neoga Police Department for more than 30 years before retiring in 2011.
According to Neoga Police Officer Jim Fuller, he and other fellow officers would offer to plow Mattern's driveway, but Mattern would always refuse the help. Several community members say Mattern will be remembered as a police officer that was always willing to help others, and who always worked very hard.
