Authorities informing Sangamon County residents of phone scam

Posted:
SANGAMON COUNTY - Sangamon County authorities say they have received several reports of a phone scam that's making its way through the area.

Authorities say several citizens have reported receiving calls from an individual claiming to be from the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office about missing jury duty.  The citizens report that the caller is telling them there will be a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty, and that they need to go to the Sangamon County jail or clerk's office to resolve the situation.

Officials say the calls that are being made are part of a scam, and that no one from the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office or Jury Commission has called anyone regarding jury duty.  Officials also say the offices notify residents through the U.S. Postal Service.

If you receive a call of this nature, you are advised to contact the Sangamon County Jury Commission at (217) 753-6715.
