UPDATE: Sullivan woman found murdered in apartment

SULLIVAN--A quiet small-town neighborhood transformed into a busy crime scene Wednesday, after a Sullivan woman was found dead in her apartment and authorities are calling her death a homicide.

Sullivan police were called to that apartment complex on North Graham Street around 11:30 in the morning, after a woman discovered two people unresponsive inside one of the units. When officers arrived, they found one of the victims, 43-year-old Sheri Randall, dead. They say she was murdered.

“I was pretty shocked,” said Randall's neighbor, Ruhail Iqbal. “I didn't know that something terrible was going to happen just like that.”

Authorities say Randall and 40-year-old Michael Yost both suffered apparent stab wounds.  The Moultrie County Coroner pronounced Randall dead at the scene at about 11:50 a.m., while Yost was taken to a Decatur hospital for treatment, where is said to be in stable condition.  Randall's autopsy was conducted by Coroner's Forensic Pathologist Shiping Bao, M.D. Thursday morning in Champaign.  Bao says the preliminary cause of Randall's death was due to multiple stab wounds to the abdomen.

Meanwhile, the Sullivan community is processing the sudden and tragic loss of a woman they say was a loving mother.

“It was pretty scary,” said Iqbal. “I was telling my friend, ‘I guess I need to move out now.'”

Illinois State Police took over the investigation, which is ongoing. They say it appears to be an isolated incident and that there is no reason for anyone in the community to fear for their own safety.

Police would not comment on whether they have a suspect or whether they are in custody.
