Civil rights activist cancels University of Illinois lecture

URBANA - A prominent civil rights activist has announced that he has canceled a scheduled appearance at the University of Illinois due to the school's decision to withdraw Steven Salaita's job offer.

Cornel West was scheduled to speak at the university's Urbana-Champaign campus in April.  However, West says that he will not speak, calling the university's decision to withdraw Salaita's job offer "a moral scandal."

Salaita was offered a Native American studies professor position at the university, starting in August 2014.  The job offer was rescinded over a series of Twitter messages that Salaita had posted.  In response, Salaita filed a lawsuit in an attempt to force the school to give him the job.
