Champaign police investigate shooting incident

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in their investigation into a shooting incident that happened during the early morning hours of February 28.

Authorities say at about 2:33 a.m., police officers were dispatched to a report of a fight involving 20 to 30 people in a parking lot behind High Dive bar in Champaign.  When the first officer arrived on scene, he says he heard a gunshot and saw a person collapse to the ground, followed by several vehicles leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Upon being interviewed by officers, witnesses say they saw a black male fire a handgun into the crowd.  The victim, a 22-year-old male, suffered life-threatening injuries during this incident, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
