Man found innocent of armed robbery and sexual assault charges
PEORIA - A man who was convicted of armed robbery and aggravated criminal sexual assault charges in relation to a 1994 home invasion has been declared innocent by a Peoria County judge.
Authorities say Christopher Coleman, 41, was found innocent after testimony and evidence was reviewed by a judge. Coleman was convicted in 1995, but the Illinois Supreme Court ordered a new trial for him in late 2013. Prosecutors dropped all charges against Coleman in March 2014, which prompted Coleman to ask the court to find him innocent.
Coleman was sentenced to 60 years in prison after being convicted. According to a Northwestern University School of Law, which represented Coleman, he is the first person to be declared innocent in court in Peoria County.
