Champaign police make one arrest in shooting incidents
CHAMPAIGN - Champaign police say one person has been arrested in connection with a shooting incident that happened on March 9.
Authorities say at about 4:27 p.m., the Champaign Police Department deployed its SWAT team to the 400 block of East Washington Street for a report of shots fired. Police say this report of shots fired was the second one officers received about this block in approximately 24 hours.
Upon arriving, officers identified seven individuals as being at the scene of the crime, and were taken into custody for questioning. Police say after an initial investigation, a search warrant was issued and served, resulting in the arrest of a 15-year-old juvenile suspect. Authorities say a handgun was recovered during the serving of the search warrant. The suspect faces a preliminary charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Champaign police say this investigation is related to six reported incidents of the aggravated discharge of a firearm that has happened within the city over the last several days. During one of the incidents, police say a 12-year-old sustained two gunshot wounds to the leg while riding in an vehicle.
