15-year-old arrested in connection to at least one of six recent Champaign shootings
CHAMPAIGN--A 15-year-old was arrested in Champaign and charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm for his involvement in at least one of six shootings in the city since last Friday.
The Champaign SWAT team was deployed to a home in the 400 block of East Washington Street around 4:30 PM, after receiving multiple reports of shots fired.
Police spoke with seven individuals at the scene, and arrested one 15-year-old suspect after issuing a search warrant that leadinvestigatorss to a handgun.
This was the second report of shots fired on that block within 24 hours and one of six throughout the city since Friday.
A 12-year-old was shot twice in the leg at the first shooting on Eureka Street on March 6th. No other injuries have been reported from any of the other shootings, but police continue their search for more suspected shooters.
"We're following up on the six reports we've had since Friday," said Champaign Police Deputy Chief Joe Gallo. "We're following up on each of those cases to see if they are related. It does appear that we have at least two groups that are targeting each other."
