MACON COUNTY - Macon County authorities say one person has died in a single-vehicle crash that happened in Blue Mound Tuesday night.

The Macon County Sheriff's Office tells WAND that at about 7:25 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a crash near the intersection of Route 48 and West Mound Street in Blue Mound.  Upon arriving, deputies say they found that a pickup truck had crashed into an apartment building located in the 200 block of North Railroad Avenue, commonly referred to as Route 48.

Authorities say the driver, identified as 53-year-old Jeff Bingham, was trapped inside the truck, and had to be extricated by the combined efforts of the Blue Mound and South Macon Fire Departments.  The driver was then taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after entering the emergency room.

According to Macon County Coroner Michael Day, Bingham's death was caused by generalized blunt force trauma to the head and torso.  This crash is being investigated by the Macon County Sheriff's Office and the Blue Mound Police Department.

We will provide more details as they become available.
