Champaign man arraigned on murder charge

URBANA - A Champaign man has been arraigned on charges of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Jermel Hedrick, 24.

Robert Earl Williams, 28, was also charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine.

Hedrick was found shot to death inside a truck in the 1500 block of Winston Drive in Champaign on October 25, 2014.

Williams was arraigned at 1:30 Thursday afternoon. He pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Williams faces between 45 and 85 years in prison for the murder charge, and an additional six to 30 years on the drug-related charge.

Williams is being held on $1,000,000 bond for the murder charge and an additional $100,000 on the drug-related charge.

Hedrick's shooting was one of several that took place in Champaign late last year. Most remain under investigation.

Williams waived his right to a preliminary hearing and is due back in court April 4th at 9 AM.
