Judy Baar Topinka remembered by state lawmakers

SPRINGFIELD - State lawmakers gathered in Springfield on Thursday to celebrate the life of former Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka.

Following the reading of death resolutions in the Senate and House chambers, lawmakers shared their memories of Topinka.  Topinka died last year at the age of 70 from stroke complications.

Topinka was known as a pioneer for women seeking to serve in state office, and is the only woman to serve in two statewide offices during her career.  She was also known for her sense of humor.

Topinka spent many years in the Illinois Legislature, and was elected to three terms as state Treasurer.  She was also elected to the state comptroller position twice.  Topinka also ran for governor in 2006, losing to incumbent Rod Blagojevich.
