1 seriously injured in Sunday night motorcycle crash
DECATUR - The Decatur Police Department says one person has been seriously injured in a single motorcycle accident that happened Sunday evening.
Decatur police say at about 8:38 p.m., officers responded to a report of a motorcycle crash at Prairie Avenue and East Avenue. Upon arriving, officers began their investigation of the incident. The operator of the motorcycle was transported to a local hospital, then a Springfield hospital, for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
Officers say their initial investigation shows that the motorcycle was traveling west on Prairie Avenue when it struck a curb and left the roadway, with the operator being ejected from the motorcycle. Officers also say the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Police also say that the motorcycle's operator had a blood alcohol concentration of over .20, or more than twice the legal limit. In addition, the operator did have a valid driver's license, but did not have a motorcycle endorsement or classification. The operator was subsequently cited for driving under the influence.
Police say this crash is still under investigation by the department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team. We will provide more updates as they become available.
