Vandalia man dead after being struck by train

VANDALIA - Southern Illinois authorities say one man is dead after being struck by a train Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say at about 4:04 p.m., a west-bound freight train struck a man, just prior to the 8th Street crossing in Vandalia.  Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen identified the man as David Waltz, 71.

Authorities say Waltz was standing in the tracks when he was struck by the train.  Waltz was pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident is currently being investigated by the Vandalia Police Department, the Rail Road Police, and the Fayette County Coroner.  We will provide more details as they become available.
