Gun owners gather in Springfield to push for gun law expansion
SPRINGFIELD - Gun owners from across the state gathered at the Illinois Capitol in the hopes of convincing state lawmakers to expand the concealed carry law to cover places such as bars, churches, and hospitals.
The push to expand current concealed carry laws was part of an annual gun rally held on Wednesday. Some of the rally's attendees were able to speak with lawmakers from their home districts about potential legislation.
Some firearms groups say they believe Illinois could follow in the footsteps of other states, which don't require background checks or permits in order to carry handguns. However, gun control groups say those firearms groups want to water down the state's gun laws.
Catherine Kelly, spokesperson for Governor Bruce Rauner, says that proposals to change gun laws will be carefully evaluated by the governor.
