Decatur man arrested on multiple charges

DECATUR - Decatur police say one man has been arrested on multiple charges after officers launched an investigation into an anonymous tip on March 22.

According to Decatur police, an anonymous caller told officers that an individual, identified as Demariel Cunningham, 34, was allegedly selling narcotics from a relative's house, located in the 1500 block of North Church Street.  Police say the caller also reported that Cunningham allegedly had firearms in the house, and that Cunningham allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl who was inside the house.

Upon arriving at the home, Decatur police officers say they spoke to an individual who was identified as the only resident of the house.  Officers say the individual told police that Cunningham was a relative, and that there was a 14-year-old girl in the home.  While talking to the resident, Decatur police say they saw a person, identified by officers as Cunningham, in the home's living room.

Decatur police say officers received written consent from the resident to search the home.  Authorities say officers found two handguns during the search, and both Cunningham and the 14-year-old were taken into custody for questioning.  During a custodial interview, Decatur police say that the 14-year-old told officers that she has had an ongoing sexual relationship with Cunningham, and that Cunningham had given her crack cocaine to smoke inside the relative's house.

Cunningham was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, armed violence, and endangering the life/health of a child.  He is currently being held at the Macon County Jail on $250,000 bond.
