Champaign minor to face firearm charges in adult court

CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign County State's Attorney's Office has announced that a minor could be tried as an adult in connection with a pair of shootings that happened in Urbana and Champaign.

Authorities say Judge Heidi Ladd held hearings on the State's Attorney's Office's motions to transfer Shamario Brown, 17, from juvenile court to adult court for two charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm.  After hearing evidence from Champaign and Urbana Police Department detectives regarding both shooting incidents, Judge Ladd determined that it was appropriate to transfer the cases to adult court.

The shooting incidents in question happened in the 1600 block of Hunter Street in Urbana on October 14, 2014, and in the parking lot of the High Dive in Champaign on February 14, 2015.  Brown is currently being held at the Youth Detention Center.  If found guilty, Brown could face between four and 15 years in prison per charge.
