Alderman pushing for $10 an hour minimum wage in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD - A Springfield alderman is pushing for the city's minimum wage to be raised to $10 an hour.

At the next Springfield City Council meeting, 5th Ward Alderman Sam Cahnman says he plans to introduce an ordinance that would increase the city's minimum wage.  According to Cahnman, the idea was formed after he learned of a similar proposal that was brought up during a Decatur City Council meeting.

Cahnman also says that the proposal is not a re-election stunt, and that if the state won't act on increasing the minimum wage, then the city should.

Illinois voters approved an advisory referendum for a $10 per hour minimum wage in the state during the November 4, 2014 election.
