Champaign Park District conducts prescribed burn

CHAMPAIGN - Champaign Park District officials say they are conducting a prescribed burn for parts of Heritage Park on March 30.

Officials say the burn began at 11:00 a.m., and should be completed by early afternoon.  A prescribed burn is used to help restore native prairie plant life.

Several safety factors are being taken into consideration for this prescribed burn.  Officials say current forecasted weather is predicting favorable conditions, such as low precipitation and wind.  Staff will be using a "back burning" technique in order to ensure a slower fire spread, and crew members will have safety equipment and hand radios to keep in communication with each other.

Officials also say affected sections of pathways near the burn area will be closed during this time for public safety.  Staff members are stationed at each barricade to answer questions and monitor the area.
