CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department has announced that they are investigating a shooting incident that happened Saturday evening.
Champaign police say on March 28, at about 6:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of Clover Lane for a report of a shooting. Upon arriving, Champaign police officers found a 17-year-old female who had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and that the shot was allegedly fired by a friend, identified as Jayvon Nichols-Pelmore, 16.
Champaign police say that all information obtained from the investigation into this incident indicates that the shooting was an accident. However, police say Nichols-Pelmore ran from the scene, and that officers have yet to find and take him into custody. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.
According to police reports, a group of five teens were at the residence on Clover Lane when Nichols-Pelmore allegedly displayed the handgun in an attempt to "show off." Police say while Nichols-Pelmore was allegedly showing the gun, the gun accidentally went off, striking the victim. According to authorities, officers were told that Nichols-Pelmore apologized profusely before running from the scene, while the other teens applied pressure to the wound and provided medical aid until police arrived. Champaign police also say that a 4-year-old and 6-year-old were present when the gun went off.
Authorities say Nichols-Pelmore is currently listed as a missing endangered runaway, and that a Champaign Warrant of Apprehension has been issued. Nichols-Pelmore is described as a black male, standing 5'3", weighing 105 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Nichols-Pelmore is asked to contact the Champaign Police Department at (217) 351-4545 or Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
