CHAMPAIGN - The Champaign Police Department is seeking the public's help in its investigation into a shooting incident that happened Wednesday afternoon.

Champaign police say at 1:49 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired near the 500 block of East Grove Street.  Authorities say an armed suspect was seen running eastbound on East Grove Street shortly after shots were heard, and that the suspect was last seen entering the area near Hamilton on the Park in Urbana.

In addition, since the suspect was seen running near the south side of Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Champaign police say officers notified Champaign Community Unit School District 4, and the school was put on lock down while officers provided a visible presence at the school.  Champaign police say that officers remained at the school while students were being released, and that bus service was provided to students who normally walk home from school.

Champaign police say that there is no known property damage or injuries caused from this incident.  The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 20 years old, and standing 5'8" with a thin build.  The suspect was wearing a black or gray hooded sweatshirt, a white shirt, stone washed or bleached jeans, and was carrying a handgun.
