Applying early could help students get more financial aid

DECATUR - Central Illinois parents and students received some help in navigating the sometimes-confusing process of applying for financial aid for college on at a forum sponsored by State Representative Sue Scherer.

Applying for financial aid for the upcoming school year may be on the mind of students and parents, and while finding the funds to attend college can be a headache, local college officials say applying early for financial aid could give you a leg up in receiving money.

Lisa Gregory, Executive Director of Public Information for Richland Community College said, "Pell dollars are dollars that can be used for living expenses as well as education expenses. So at community colleges many students are already working or they are raising a family and so those additional pell dollars really help supplement their income while their trying to secure their degree."
