Early-morning fire damages downtown Decatur business

DECATUR - Decatur Fire Department officials say firefighters responded to a fire at Del's Popcorn Shop Friday morning.

Authorities say firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of North Merchant Street at about 12:17 a.m. for a report of a fire.  Upon arriving, firefighters found a fire at the rear of Del's Popcorn Shop, and immediately began to combat the flames.

Fire officials say the fire was extinguished by 4:32 a.m., and that the first and second floor of the building was heavily damaged during this incident.  Officials also say several other businesses and apartments sustained smoke damage.

Authorities say one firefighter was taken to a local hospital for a back injury.  No other injuries were reported.  Fire officials say this incident is still under investigation.
