Madigan introduces bill that would increase funding for crime labs

CHICAGO - House Speaker Michael Madigan has introduced legislation that would increase the amount of funding that forensics laboratories receive next fiscal year.

Under the proposed legislation, state crime labs would receive an additional $6 million to help address a backlog in processing evidence.  The increase in funding would happen during the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

According to Madigan, funding the labs should be a priority, and that the legislation has received the support of several victim rights and law enforcement groups.  Madigan also says that the delays in processing evidence is having an effect on people across the state.

However, the legislation could face opposition by other state lawmakers, who will have to work to tackle a budget shortfall totaling more than $6 billion next year.
