CHAMPAIGN -- It took all of 13 innings, but the Illinois baseball team eventually dispatched on Northwestern, 3-1 on Friday night.
Pat McInerney's 13th-inning solo home run put the Illini up 2-1. David Kerian added some insurance on a run-scoring double, and Tyler Jay shut the door for his 8th save of the season.
Illinois was able to get to extras thanks in part to another stellar performance from starter Kevin Duchene, who allowed 1 run -- unearned -- in 9 innings, dropping his season ERA to 0.64.
The Illini (22-6-1, 3-1) were playing as the visiting team at home, due to construction at Northwestern's home field. They'll continue the series at Illinois Field Saturday.
