SPRINGFIELD - United Way of Central Illinois officials say the organization is giving a $30,000 grant to a Sangamon County high school program that aims to teach students the challenges and rewards of running a business.
Officials say the venture grant is being given to Sangamon Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities. The investment was approved unanimously by the United Way's Board of Directors and Venture Grant Committee. The money will be used to expand the Sangamon CEO program by adding a second class next year.
Students who participate in this program are given the chance to meet with local business owners, who share their knowledge and experience. Over the course of one year, participants visit more than 70 different sites, and host more than 150 guest speakers. Using ideas presented through these meetings, students then create a class and individual business.
