SPRINGFIELD - Legislation that would grant two more years of rate hikes for Ameren Illinois and Commonwealth Edison has been signed by Governor Bruce Rauner.
Under the measure, both electric utilities will continue to receive rate hikes through 2019 to help cover the cost of smart-grid technology installation. Officials say the Illinois General Assembly passed the measure during the fall veto session last year. However, the bill was held by Senate President John Cullerton until after former Governor Pat Quinn left office.
Ameren officials say the installation of new digital electric meters, as well as other improvements, is taking longer than expected.
